Management

Health

Entering a healthcare community is rarely easy for either a resident or their family.  Despite the clear need for placement and the loving intentions behind the move, it is a challenge to accept this change in living arrangements for everyone involved.  For a resident living with dementia, the change can be even harder.

Residents living with dementia not only have difficulty comprehending why the change is occurring, they also have tremendous difficulty with the changes to both their physical surroundings and to their daily routine.  These issues with adjustment put them at a higher risk to wander both inside, and unfortunately outside, the senior living community.  Communities respond with wander management techniques including traditional elopement prevention systems.  Most of these systems use an ankle bracelet placed on a resident’s leg.

Many times a resident living with dementia doesn’t understand why a change to the new senior living community has occurred. Often they feel they have done something wrong that caused the move to another setting.  Imagine this person with these feelings of shame then being outfitted with an institutional-looking ankle bracelet.  This bracelet has a box attached by plastic straps with holes.  Either they aren’t told why the bracelet is placed or they are simply told it is to keep them safe.  The person may think that the bracelet is at best a nuisance or at worst that it is like a home detention bracelet used for criminals.  If the resident gets too close to a door, a loud alarm goes off, reinforcing the fact that the resident is “in trouble” and can’t leave.

“It is not the institutional looking box, but a comfortable feeling watch that mirrors a traditional timepiece worn by many.”

GeoWatch – The better way

GeoGuard Pro uses a GeoWatch instead of a clunky ankle bracelet. The GeoWatch looks similar to mainstream smartwatches. It is not the institutional looking box, but a comfortable feeling watch that mirrors a traditional timepiece worn by many. Residents can look around and see other residents, staff members and family members wearing a device that looks very similar; limiting the amount of embarrassment or shame a resident feels when considering a device placed on their body.

The GeoWatch doesn’t make loud sounds or alarms, limiting feelings of being startled or shamed when a resident moves. The GeoWatch sends a series of notifications to the staff caring the resident if the resident moves into an unsafe area. Staff can then respond in a compassionate way rather than alarms sounding if a resident gets too close to a door.
